Most parents of teenagers know that there are times when an adolescent’s disrespect of a parent merits a swift slap to the face. But when Nair Rodriguez’ 19-year-old daughter crossed that line outside of an Oklahoma movie theater, the cops, declaring that a crime was committed, got involved.
Now, because of a private family dispute, Rodriguez’s husband is dead.
When Moore, Okla., police arrived on the scene of a domestic dispute call at a local movie theater, the Rodriguez family was dealing with the aftermath of a child/parent dispute that resulted in the mother, Nair, slapping her 19-year-old daughter.
According to Mrs. Rodriguez, however, responding officers (three on duty and one off duty) seemed uninterested in speaking with her and her daughter and immediately confronted her understandably upset husband Luis, who had been trying to intervene in the mother/daughter spat.
“My husband was trying to calm (us) down, because that’s what he was . . . a grizzly bear . . . but with a teddy bear heart,” Mrs. Rodriguez told the local reporters at KFOR.
Police tackled the man to the ground and, according to Mrs. Rodriguez, beat him to death. The officers have since claimed that Mr. Rodriguez reacted to their intervention in a combative manner.
“I saw a bunch of police getting on my husband,” Mrs. Rodriguez told local reporters, explaining her decision to begin videoing the incident on her phone.
As she filmed, Mrs. Rodriguez witnessed her husband’s life slipping away in the custody of the officers who had arrived with the purported goal of protecting the family’s members from one another.
As she pleaded with the cops to get off of her husband, the tone of Mrs. Rodriguez’ voice in the footage indicates that she clearly knew something is very wrong.
“Luis! Luis!” she called out, begging her husband to let her know that he was conscious.
But Mr. Rodriguez did not respond. And as his lifeless body lay on the pavement, officers turned their attention to a very distraught Mrs. Rodriguez.
“He refused to give his ID,” an officer said. “He got combative.”
Shortly thereafter, the video ends.
Following the interaction with police that culminated in her husband’s untimely death, the police confiscated her cellphone and later claimed that they were awaiting a warrant to pull video evidence from the device.
“They took the telephone without my permission,” Mrs. Rodriguez told local reporters.
The phone was later returned, and the video evidence recently was made available to the public.
As an investigation into the matter continues, the police contend that they have nothing to fear.
Chief Jerry Stilling said, “It was his actions, taking an aggressive physical stance and his refusal to cooperate that led officers to believe he needed to be detained.”
It is likely that State investigators will also declare the victim’s death to be his own fault because this is yet another example of the ongoing institutionalization of an escalate-and-kill approach to American law enforcement.
