This month, rebels stopped Islamic State militants shortly before they reached the town of Maraa, about 40 kilometers north of Aleppo. Assad's troops, for their part, would only have to advance a few kilometers, repel the rebels and close their circle around Aleppo. Then they would be in a position to starve out the eastern part of the city.
